 The Power Is With You

By: Roy Kindelberger

Boom! A tree crashes in the backyard, almost hitting your house. It sounds like a car crash as it hits the blackberry bushes. Branches and brambles fly all around. The rain is pelting sideways, water flows down the street.

The wind swirls and trees sway. The lights flicker . . . flicker again. The lights go out. The computer screen is blank. The television is no longer showing your favorite show and the music you were dancing to is silent.

Now what?

No television, no computer, no lights, and no music. Don’t worry. First off, you want to stay safe and not go outside during a windstorm.

Grab flashlights, have your parents light candles, and start a fire in the fireplace. Snuggle in with your favorite blanket.

Even though the power is out, the rain drenching, and the wind howling, you can still have fun.

Here is what you can do:

1. You can dance if you want to. Just put batteries in a radio and find a song you like.

2. How about a book? Nothing better then reading a book by flashlight. Or retell your favorite stories in front of the fire like at a campfire.

3. Cards! How about a little Go Fish? UNO? Crazy Eights? Old Maid?

4. You can play your favorite board game: Checkers, Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, Pictionary, Memory, or Scrabble.

5. How about flashlight tag? What’s this? One person is “It” and the others hide. The person who is “It” can catch you when they shine the flashlight on you. Then it’s your turn to be “It.”

6. Snick Snack! This is a snack where you can eat a variety of goodies: celery with peanut butter, carrots with ranch dressing, apple wedges, crackers with cheese, pretzels, peanuts, raisins, and some little candies.

The lights probably won’t be out for long, the rain will stop, and the wind will slow. You’ll have your computer back and you can run outside. Even if there is no power, take a second and try something new or something you haven’t had a chance to do in a long time.

The power is with you!
