One Wish

By: Karin R. Larson

“Hey, watch out!” Sam heard as he tripped. He brushed dirt from his eyes and wondered what he’d run into that could talk.

Sam gasped when he spotted a huge gold pot sitting right in the middle of the cornrow he’d been running through. Standing on tippy toes, Sam peered over the edge and couldn’t believe what he saw.

A tiny leprechaun stared back at him.

“Please help me,” the leprechaun said. “Get me out of this pot, and I’ll grant you one wish.”

Sam was more than happy to save the little leprechaun. A little scared because he’d never met a leprechaun before, Sam reached in, grabbed the leprechaun, and pulled him up and out of the pot.

“My name’s Pat,” he heard the leprechaun say. “Thanks for the help. I’ve been stuck for hours.”

“You’re welcome,” said Sam. “It’s nice to meet you.  My name’s Sam.”

“Well, Sam, what’s your wish?”

Sam thought and thought. He’d really love a new bike or one of those remote controlled cars like his friend, John, got the other day. He could almost feel the wind whip across his face as he raced alongside John’s new prize.

As he decided which wish would be the best, he realized that this could be the chance he’d waited for.

Mom and Dad worked so hard to take care of the family since the farm hadn’t produced much the past few years. Sam had wished things could be easier for the family, so that his parents wouldn’t have to work so hard.

Sam said, “I wish the rain would come chase away the clouds of dust, and the fields would grow.”

“OK,” said Pat. “You’re a fine young man and I’m happy to grant your wish. It was nice to meet you. Good day!”

Sam raced home for supper, his heart happy from having met the leprechaun.

Sam tumbled into bed later that night and wondered if the little leprechaun would grant his wish.

Sam peered out the window the next morning and saw big rain puddles, huge rows of corn, and lots of beans in the fields.

Mom and Dad were smiling as they ate breakfast. Sam felt happy that his wish was used to help others instead of himself.

He smiled thinking about his own special secret.
