 Three Friends

By: Carol Iverson

Brittany had three good friends at school . . .  Margo, Tess, and Winona.

On Monday, Margo laughed at Brittany and said, “Your hair looks funny. It sticks out all over the place.”

"I don't like it when people are mean to me," Brittany said. "I still have two other friends. I'll play with Tess instead.”

On Tuesday, Tess didn't share the computer with Brittany. “I’m using it,” Tess said.

Brittany walked away. “I don't like selfish people. I still have one friend. I'll play with Winona instead.”

On Wednesday, Winona told someone else a secret Brittany had shared with her.

Brittany’s face turned red. "I don't like it when I can’t trust my friends.”

On Thursday, Brittany ignored them.

When Friday came she said, "I'm glad there is no school tomorrow. I'm tired of my friends."

On Saturday, Brittany played with her dog, Sonny. Sonny was a golden lab and today he was her best friend. Brittany watched television for a while. Then she read her favorite book about endangered animals.

On Sunday, she played games on her computer. She played math games, spelling games, and card games. She sat on the sofa and looked out the window. The sun shone brightly. She sighed. She wished she knew how to get her friends back.

Sonny jumped up on the couch with her. He wanted to play. "Get down!" she scolded. Sonny crept away, his tail tucked under him. He glanced back at her and started to go into the kitchen.

"I'm sorry," she said. She thumped the cushion next to her. "Come back." Sonny leapt up, his tail wagging. Brittany petted him, stroking his silky golden hair. "I'm sorry I was mean."

Sonny licked her face.

"But you like me, anyway, don't you?" Brittany said and kissed him on the nose.

She thought of her friends. Like them, she wasn't always likeable either.

At school on Monday, Margo was having trouble with a math problem. Brittany helped her figure it out.

"I like it when people are helpful," Margo said. "You like to do nice things.”

Brittany said, “I have one friend back again."

On Tuesday, Brittany passed around a bag of candy. It was Tess’s favorite peppermint candies, and she said, "I like it when people share with others. Brittany is generous."

Brittany said, "Now I have two friends back."

On Wednesday, Brittany was the first one to Winona’s side when Winona fell and hurt herself. She helped her get up and asked her if she was okay.

"I like it when people are caring," Winona said. “Brittany is always ready to help.”

Brittany said, “Now I have my three friends back again, Margo, Tess, and Winona.”

Then she added, “And I think I'll keep it that way.”
