Does your older brother
or sister tell you Santa Claus isn’t real? Some older kids do stop believing in Santa Claus. Sometimes it’s because
they think their friends will laugh at them. But, mostly it’s because they’ve stopped believing in . . . MAGIC!
Magic is what makes Santa Claus so special. A little girl named Virginia O’Hanlon
learned this after writing a letter to The New York Sun.
The New York Sun was a newspaper many years ago. Virginia knew that the newspaper only told true stories
and shared information with its readers. At the age of eight, Virginia wrote The New York Sun a letter asking if Santa Claus was real. She waited many
days for an answer. One day, the answer finally came to Virginia’s letter.

In 1897, The
New York Sun printed
an article entitled: “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.” In the article, little eight-year-old Virginia was
told:
“Yes,
Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they
abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus!”
So next time your brother or sister tells you Santa Claus isn’t real, you can
tell them he is. Let them know a little girl named Virginia O’Hanlon already found the answer and the answer was, “Yes, Virginia,
There is a Santa Claus!”
